Langtang Valley Trek - 11 Days

This trip is suitable for those who want to enjoy the UNESCO Cultural World Heritage Sites located in Kathmandu and looking for a short trekking adventure with spectacular Himalayan mountain views along with unique mountain culture. The trek to Langtang Valley is a short and relatively easier. As the Langtang region lies close to Kathmandu, the trailhead is easily accessible. The Langtang Valley Trek takes you through various climatic zones ranging from subtropical to alpine. The trail passes through the Langtang National Park and almost touches the border between Nepal and Tibet. So, you can view Langtang Himal and Tibetan peaks en route. The Langtang National Park is home to rare flora and fauna. It contains deciduous plants like oak and maple trees, evergreen plants like pine and various kinds of rhododendron. In addition, various animals like Himalayan tahr, rhesus monkeys, red pandas, etc. are found in this region. Stories about the sightings of mysterious beast Yeti around this region can be heard. Trek to this magnificent region to experience its wonderful biodiversity. The majority of the residents found on this trail are from Tamang community so this trail is also known as Tamang Heritage Trail. Visit their traditional houses and experience their unique culture. The region is dotted with ancient monasteries.

This trek is easy and beginners with average physical fitness can do it. The route goes uphill and downhill and there are some steep sections en route. If you are a hiker and can walk for long distances without any difficulty then you can easily do this trek.

There are many local tea houses or mountain lodges usually run by local people along the trail that provide the basic facilities for the travelers where you would be eating and staying overnight throughout your trek. Arrival in Kathmandu (1350 m)

Highlights: Exploration of the cultural city of Kathmandu

Arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu. Our representative will welcome you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel. Take rest and try to get over the effects of jet lag. A brief session regarding our further program would be conducted. Explore the neighborhood and arrange your dinner on your own. Catch up on some much needed sleep and prepare yourself for the next day tour.

Day 2
Kathmandu City Tour (1350 m)

Duration: 8 hours

Highlights: Exploration of the cultural city of Kathmandu

We will spend the day exploring the Kathmandu Valley. First, we will visit Swayambhunath also called the “Monkey Temple”. Take in the views of the city from atop one of the most important Buddhist stupas in Nepal. You will be then taken to Pashupatinath Temple, one of the most prominent Hindu religious site in the world. After this a short lunch break will be taken. Lunch is on your own. Finally you will be taken to Patan Durbar Square. In the evening, join your fellow travelers for a welcome dinner. Also, you can do the last hour shopping to buy some gears needed during your trekking.

Kathmandu to Syabrubesi (1460 m)

Total distance: Approximately 6 hours of driving

Transportation: Private jeep/van

Accommodation: Tea house at Syabrubesi

Highlights: The view point of Kakani, Ganesh Himal, Langtang Himal and Gosainkunda Mountains

We will head towards north from Kathmandu early in the morning in a private jeep/van for syabrubesi. You will be amazed when you see the spectacular views as you ride through terraced fields, traditional villages and hillsides filled with verdant forest. The winding and bumpy road passes by the riverside settlement of Trishuli Bazar and Dhunche before getting to Syabrubesi. Upon your arrival at Syabrubesi you will taken to a tea house.

Day 4
Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel (2560 m)

Total distance: Approximately 6 hours of trekking

Accommodation: Tea house at Lama Hotel

Highlights: Langtang National Park and Bhote Koshi/ Sunkoshi River

Today is the first day of your trek. After breakfast, begin your ascent and enter into Langtang National Park, one of the oldest park in Nepal enriched with diverse flora and fauna. You will pass by the villages of Khangjim and Sherpagaun. The trail goes past Bhote Koshi River that originates in Tibet and through dense forest filled with rhododendron and oak trees. If you are lucky enough you will get the chance to view monkeys swinging in the trees on the trail. Stop for lunch on the way and take in the spectacular views. Continue your ascend until you get to the village of Lama Hotel. Once you reach Lama Hotel, you will be taken to a tea house. Overnight at Lama Hotel.

Day 5
Lama Hotel to Langtang Village (3455 m)

Total distance: Approximately 6 hours of trekking

Accommodation: Tea house at Langtang Village

Highlights: The view of Langtang Lirung Peak and Langtang Village

After breakfast, start trek along an uphill trail through a dense forest of rhododendron, maple and oak. As the day progresses you will get a glimpse of the Langtang Lirung Peak. You can enjoy the magnificent view of Lantang Himal as you walk past Horse Stable (Ghode Tabela in Nepali) at 3000 m. The trail leaves the forest after Horse Stable and passes through an open area. The area is dotted with Tamang villages and temporary shelters of yak herders. Trek until you get to Langtang Village. You will be welcomed by Buddhist prayer flags, mani stone walls, Tibetan style architecture, golden barley fields and roaming yaks at Langtang Village. Upon arrival at Langtang Village, you will be taken to a tea house. Take rest for some time. Overnight at Langtang Village.

Day 6
Langtang Village to Kyanjin Gompa (3817 m)

Total distance: Approximately 3 hours of trekking

Accommodation: Tea house at Kyanjin Gompa

Highlights: Yak pastures, Kyanjin Gompa (a centuries old monastery) and the vantage point of Kyanjin Ri (4984 m)

The trail ascends through Tamang settlement and reaches Mundu after half an hour of walk where you will find traditional houses and modern tea houses. You can enjoy the sights of yak pastures on the way. Walk past glacial rivers and cross bridges. After three hours of walking since beginning, you will reach the village of Kyanjin Gompa. Kyanjin Gompa is a centuries old Buddhist monastery. The picturesque village is named after the Kyanjin Gompa. You will be taken to a tea house where your rooms are booked. Take rest for some time. Rest of the day is for you to acclimatize and explore the area. There is a yak cheese factory just north of Hotel Yala Peak run by the government. Visit the Kyanjin Gompa and the cheese factory. You can buy and taste some cheese in the factory. If the weather is favorable, you can hike to the nearby hill of Kyanjin Ri (4984 m) and enjoy the magnificent sunset over the snow-capped mountains of Gang Chhenpo, Langshisa and Dorje Lakpa. Kyanjin Ri, a small hill lying to the northeast of Kyanjin Gompa, is a popular vantage point in the Langtang Region.

Day 7
Kyanjin Gompa to Lama Hotel (2560 m)

Total distance: Approximately 6 hours of trekking

Highlights: Downwards view of the Langtang region

It’s time to return back, so begin your descent towards the village of Lama Hotel from Kyanjin Gompa. Walk along the Langtang river and go past many Tamang settlements, Langtang Village and Ghode Tabela (Horse Stable) before you reach Lama Hotel Village. On the way you can enjoy the magnificent sights of green alpine meadows and yaks grazing on the pastures. On your arrival to Lama Hotel, our guide will take you to a tea house. Rest and relax. Overnight in Lama Hotel.

Day 8
Lama Hotel to Syabrubeshi (1460 m)

Total distance: Approximately 6 hours of trekking

Highlights:

Today is the last day of your trek! Enjoy the downhill trek in the mountains while heading back to Syabrubesi through Wangel. Take in the views of surrounding areas. Take hot shower and relax the evening as you have completed the trek.

Day 9
Syabrubeshi to Kathmandu (1350 m)

Total distance: Approximately 5-6 hours of driving

Transportation: Private jeep/ van

Accommodation: Hotel in Kathmandu

Highlights: Thrilling bumpy and winding road

Take a ride back to Kathmandu on a private jeep or van. You will be travelling on one of deadliest road in Nepal. You will pass by Dhunche, Kalikasthan, Betrabati and Trishuli before you reach Kathmandu. On your arrival in Kathmandu, you will transferred to your hotel. In the evening join your companions and trek crews for a farewell dinner.

Congratulations! You have completed your trek to Langtang Valley.

Day 10
Departure from Kathmandu (1350 m)

Transportation: Private car/ van
