Ghorepani Poonhill Trek - 11 Days

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is famous for magnificent views of Himalayan mountains and the warm culture of ethnic communities. This trek is easy and ideal for novice trekkers of all age groups (above 6 years) with average physical fitness. It takes you close to the Himalayas without exerting yourself too much within a short time frame. The centuries old mountain trail passes through terraced paddy fields and pristine forests of rhododendron and pine. You will walk through the traditional Magar and Gurung villages, home to brave Gurkha soldiers and experience their unique culture and warm hospitality. A visit to Ghandruk, a Gurung heritage village, one of the main attractions on this trek will let you experience the Gurung culture and enjoy the majestic views of Himalayas. There are plenty of local tea houses or mountain lodges usually run by local families providing basic facilities where you will have your meal and stay overnight. Poon Hill, the most popular viewpoint in the Annapurna region located at an altitude of 3210 m, offers you to see the spectacular sunrise and the panoramic views of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna massifs. Enjoy close up views of the snow-capped peaks from Poon Hill and other places en route.

Autumn and Spring are the best seasons for this trip. It is neither too hot nor too cold during these seasons.. An autumn trek promises clear skies and stunning mountain vistas while a spring trek will allow you to see colorful rhododendron blooms. There is no risk of altitude sickness on this trek as the trail does not go beyond 3000 meters. The highest point you will reach is the viewpoint of Poon Hill (3210 m) where you will spend only a short period of time.

Day 1
Arrival in Kathmandu (1350 m)

Highlights: Exploration of the cultural city of Kathmandu

Arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), Kathmandu. Our representative will welcome you at the airport and transfer to your hotel. Take rest and try to get over the effects of jet lag. A brief session regarding our further program would be conducted. Explore the neighborhood and arrange your dinner on your own. Catch up on some much needed sleep and prepare yourself for the next day tour. Overnight at hotel.

Day 2
Kathmandu City Tour (1350 m)

Duration: 8 hours

Transportation: Van/ Jeep

Accommodation: Hotel in Kathmandu

Highlights: Exploration of the cultural city of Kathmandu

We will spend the day exploring the Kathmandu Valley. First, we will visit Swayambhunath also called the “Monkey Temple”. Take in the views of the city from atop one of the most important Buddhist stupas in Nepal. You will be then taken to Pashupatinath Temple, one of the most prominent Hindu religious site in the world. After this a short lunch break will be taken. Lunch is on your own. Finally you will be taken to Patan Durbar Square. In the evening, join your fellow travelers for a welcome dinner. Also, you can do the last hour shopping to buy some gears needed during your trekking.

Day 3
Kathmandu to Birethanti (1025 m)

Total distance: Around 7 hours by vehicle and 45 minutes on foot

Transportation: Private van/ jeep

Accommodation: Lodge in Birethanti

Highlights: Various rivers, terraced fields and green mountains

We will travel by a private van or jeep to Nayapul, the trail head, via Pokhara and then walk for around 45 minutes to Birethanti, the entrance point to the Annapurna region. Overnight stay at a lodge in Birethanti.

Inclusions: All meals, coffee, tea, water, guided tour, transportation from Kathmandu to Nayapul, and double occupancy accommodations.

Day 4
Birethanti to Ulleri (1960 m)

Trekking distance: Approximately 6-7 hours (Around 10 km)

Accommodation: Lodge in Ulleri

Highlights: Rivulets, waterfalls and terraced fields, the peaks of Annapurna South and Himchuli

Today is the first day of our expedition and it is relatively tough one. The trail passes through the terraced field from where we can see many waterfalls and rivulets. From Birethanti, we will ascend gradually along the Bhurungdi rivulet to Tikhedhunga. On the way we will stop for a lunch break. From Tikhedhunga, we will follow the steep stone steps until we get to the village of Ulleri.

Day 5
Ulleri to Ghorepani (2860 m)

Trekking distance: Approximately 5-6 hours (Around 10 km)

Accommodation: Lodge in Ghorepani

Highlights: Annapurna ranges

The trail today is quite exciting as it ascends a rapid altitude of around 1000 m. The trail up to Nangethanti is undulating but mostly uphill steps. We would stop for a lunch break on the way. You would be rewarded with the view of Annapurna range as soon as you get to the hilltop village of Ghorepani for your tiresome efforts to attain this altitude.

Day 6
Ghorepani to Poon Hill (3210 m) to Tadapani (2600 m)

Total distance: Approximately 7 hours of trekking (Around 14 km)

Accommodation: Lodge/ Tea-house in Tadapani

Highlights: The magnificent views of the snow covered mountains from Poon Hill

Today is one of the most important days of this trek as we are heading towards the famous vantage point of Poon Hill to catch the stunning views of golden snow covered peaks in the presence of beautiful sunrise. For this you need to arise before sunrise and take an hour of walk to Poon Hill. After spending half an hour at this point, head back to the lodge where you stayed the previous night in Ghorepani and have breakfast there. After breakfast, we will start our trek for the day to Tadapani. Here the trail will ascend for around two hours and pass through beautiful waterfalls along the way. We will take a tea break at Deurali, then, descend towards Tadapani. Overnight at a lodge or tea-house at Tadapani.

Day 7
Tadapani to Ghandruk (1940 m) to Tolka (1700 m)

Total distance: Approximately 7 hours of walking (Around 15 km)

Accommodation: Lodge/ Tea house in Tolka

Highlights: Gurung heritage village of Ghandruk

This is another important day as we pass through Ghandruk, the popular Gurung village having historical significance. Here we can find one of the brave ethnic groups popular in Gurkha soldiers. We can experience their unique culture and enjoy their warm hospitality. We can also find their traditional cottages made up of mud and stone and roof of stone and grass in Ghandruk. We would savor our lunch here while enjoying the Himalayan views. Today is quite tougher day as the trail involve steep stone staircases.

Day 8
Tolka to Pokhara (884 m)

Total distance: Approximately 4 hours of trekking and 1 hour on jeep/van

Accommodation: Hotel in Pokhara

Highlights: The most rainy area of Lumle in Nepal

Today is the last day of our trek. The trail is relatively easier. You will be picked up on a jeep or van from the village of Kande and reach Pokhara after one hour of drive. Explore the city of Pokhara and the lake side in the evening. Manage your dinner on your own.

Day 9
Pokhara City Tour (884 m)

Duration: 8 hours

Highlights: The city of lakes – Pokhara

Today we will travel through different landmarks of the Pokhara City in a relaxed manner. We will visit the World Peace Pagoda located atop a nearby hill from Pokhara which offers you the majestic view of the Pokhara City and its surroundings. Our next destination would be the International Mountain Museum which gives a clear picture about the tallest mountains in the world. In the evening, we will take a boat riding in the Phewa lake. Spend the rest of the time on your own. Arrange your dinner on your own. Overnight in Pokhara.

Day 10
Pokhara to Kathmandu (1350 m)

Total distance: Approximately 7 hours by vehicle

We will travel by a private van or jeep to Kathmandu. Join your fellow travelers for a farewell dinner and lots of booze in the evening.

Departure from Kathmandu (1350 m)
